This can happen for a variety of reasons:

A spirit feels a connection to the space.

There is a leftover energy from an event that took place there.

A spirit is staying because it feels familiar. Sometimes these beings are not even aware that they have died & are not yet on the other side.

The being actually has a job there: a keeper of space, caretaker or guardian.  (I have encountered a few of these in the Shepherdstown, West Virginia area where I have done a lot of clearings.)
